The global cocoa industry is changing dramatically, with the supply chain facing disruptions, climate change challenges, sustainability demands, and an increasing demand for technology-enabled processing and value-added products. Indonesia must improve its cocoa export competitiveness by shifting away from raw commodity exports to higher-value processed products. The current study analyzes comparative advantage, export market dynamics, and downstreaming of Indonesian cocoa exports, focusing on cocoa beans (HS 1801) and cocoa butter, fat and oil (HS 1804) in selected European markets. The research adopts a quantitative descriptive approach using international trade data from the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade) and the International Trade Center (ITC) Trade Map. To measure the comparative advantage of cocoa beans and cocoa butter, Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) is used, and Export Product Dynamics (EPD) is used to measure their market position in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany. A Downstreaming Index measures the proportion of cocoa butter exports to total cocoa bean and cocoa butter exports. Results suggest that cocoa butter has a stronger comparative advantage than cocoa beans in some European markets, while EPD shows different market positions across destination countries. The Downstreaming Index indicates a transition from raw cocoa beans to cocoa butter. Processing enabled by technology, digital traceability, quality management, and supply-chain integration may enhance downstream competitiveness and help to comply with sustainability-oriented market demands, the findings suggest. The study emphasizes the importance of the integration of cocoa downstreaming, technological upgrading and sustainable value chain development to improve Indonesia’s position in the global cocoa trade and sustainable international markets.
