Abstract

Turkey’senergy consumption is continuously increasing with industry and the populationgrowth. As production quantities can not afford consumption, it is a countrythat imports energy intensively. In energy production, hydraulic energy has alarge share. Turkey hydroelectric potential covers the theoretical potentialabout 1% in the world and about 16% of European potential. At of the end of2017, hydraulic power plants cover 35% of the total installed capacity. Thefact that energy strategies makes hydraulic energy investments attractive everyday because it is not dependent on the external conditions. As the environmentfriendly, renewable, productive and operating costs are low, it is leading thecountry’s energy policy. In this study, Turkey's potential hydroelectriccapacity, installed capacity, the distribution of the plants by region and theactual investments are discussed.
